Prince’s Piano and a Microphone Tour…The Aftermath

By Dr. Madeline Sutton

Fox Theatre
Thursday, April 7 at 7:00 & 10:00 p.m.

Because I’m a fiend, I had tickets for both the 7 pm and 10 pm shows. He was hot for the first show, but on fire for the second. He opened the second show with “When Will We Be Paid for the Work We’ve Done?” and projected a photo of a pair of wrists in shackles. Oh yeah, his mood had shifted to social justice, and immediately we knew that this set was going to be completely different from the 7 pm set. He had a few times when he was feeling it so much that he paused on the piano, said, “Y’all ain’t ready,” and stood up and walked/bopped around the stage, communicating every bit of each magical, music energy moment. We cheered and refused to leave (there was not another show that night) for four encore calls at the 10 pm show, until finally he finished the night with “Purple Rain.” He knew that’s what we needed; that that’s what we were holding out hope for. Lawd, I was glad I went to both shows. I had no idea that the only singing of “Purple Rain” that night would be his last. When he finished singing, picked up his jacket and cane and walked off stage, we were at peace with letting him go; the house lights came on; no more encore cheers, just so much respect and admiration for him always being at the top of his game.
